New Jersey officials rewrite public beach access rules - Beach Towns vs. Tourists

New Jersey, the nation's most densely populated state, is rewriting public beach access rules that may pit some beach towns against beach loving' out-of-towners.

The state stepped in and gave more local control over beach access to local communities after a court decision struck down more stringent rules that would have meant uniform standards for each shore town. New Jersey felt that it could accomplish more by working with shore towns individually and give them flexibility rather than dictating a one-size-fits-all access policy.

Most New Jersey beach towns require surfers to buy and wear beach badges costing anywhere from $5 to $12 a day, regardless of how long they are in the water. Tourism in New Jersey is a $35 billion industry. About 67 million people visited the state last year and many ended up at the beaches.

Of the approximately 125 miles of New Jersey oceanfront about 95% to 98% is accessible to the general public. New Jersey estimates that there are over 1,000 access points to the shore.

New Jersey will need to balance the rights and needs of the beach towns and the beach loving out-of-towners.

Why did Gov. accuse Home Depot of violating 'Buy American Act'

Did you know that in an effort to protect American jobs the 'Buy American Act' was passed in 1933 by Congress and signed by President Roosevelt? It required the United States government to prefer U.S. made products in any of the government’s purchases.

The law mandates that public buildings be built using only materials that have originated from the US and a few favored countries, like Canada and Israel. Home Depot has now become the latest American company accused of violating it.

The global economy, however has created many problems making it extremely difficult to define what constitutes an 'American' product. Is a Toyota that is built by American workers in a domestic plant in Tennessee an "American car"? How about a General Motors car built primarily of parts imported from China?

Other well-known companies have also faced similar investigations over the years. Companies like Office Depot, Staples, and OfficeMax to name a few. Interestingly, most of the companies have settled by paying fines totaling in the millions. The federal government sure knows how to make money off of old laws.

San Francisco Bridge built in China shipped to United States - How far have we fallen ?

Golden Gate Bridge - Construction started on Jan. 5, 1933

The fabricated steel used in the construction of the Golden Gate Bridge was manufactured by Bethlehem Steel in plants in Trenton, New Jersey and Sparrows Point, Maryland and in plants in three Pennsylvania towns: Bethlehem, Pottstown, and Steelton. The steel was loaded, in sections, onto rail cars, taken to Philadelphia and shipped through the Panama Canal to San Francisco. The shipment of the steel was timed to coincide with the construction of the bridge.

Fast-Forward to today - June 28, 2011

A new San Francisco 2,050 ft-long bridge built in China is being shipped to the United States. In July, four enormous steel skeletons will be shipped 6,500 miles from Shanghai to San Francisco before being assembled on site.     The Labor Department recently reported that the unemployment rate for teens, age 16 to 19 in May 2011, was more than 24%. In May of 2000 the unemployment rate was less than 13%. Some states are naturally hit harder than others. In California for example the unemployment rate among teenagers is more than 34%. The unemployment rate among teens in California is nearly triple the state's overall unemployment rate of 12%.

Although the summer break for teenagers is relatively short, it could feel a lot longer and hotter without a job for the summer.

Texas passes bill to save the "Incandescent light bulb" & create American jobs

On June 17, Texas Governor Rick Perry signed a bill that exempts Texas from the 2007 federal law that requires bulbs to consume less energy. The Texas bill has a provision that the incandescent light bulbs be manufactured and sold within the state. Similar legislation is pending in South Carolina and Pennsylvania.

Supporters of the 2007 Federal law stress that the law does not ban incandescent bulbs, but just creates new standards for them. The standards require increased efficiency, so that the bulbs with a lighting equivalent of 100 watts consume just 72 watts. Opponents stress that this is just another "back door" regulation to eliminate incandescent light bulbs and leave all Americans with "NO choice".

Representative Joe Barton said that the 2007 Federal law has resulted in "Washington-mandated layoffs in the middle of a desperate recession". He also said "Washington is making too many decisions that are better left to people who work for their own paychecks and earn their own living."

Representative Barton and others argue that the new law would force consumers to switch to compact fluorescent lights (CFLs), most of which are not made in the United States.

Maryland - 1st state with "Green Literacy" Graduation requirement for Public schools

Maryland public school students will need to have "Environmental Literacy" to graduate from high school under a new policy adopted by the state board of education. The requirement applies to students entering high school this fall. All students will have to meet standards set by the state. School systems will have to report to the state every five years on what they're doing to meet the requirements.

Environmental activists have now directly affected the "education curriculum" that every student is taught. I don't know anyone that doesn't want a healthy environment for our children, our grandchildren and ourselves.

Saving the planet and our environment already is woven into our lives everyday through the print media, on television, on the Internet, on product labeling, in advertisements and on and on. Is there anyone in America who has not been exposed to "Environmental Literacy" already ?

But there seems to be some unanswered questions....
What are the "state requirements" for Environment Literacy ?
Who is writing the requirements for graduation ?
Will this new required area of education need more staffing ?
What will this new Environment Literacy cost ?
How much school time will this new curriculum consume ?
( there's only so much "teaching time" in the school day )
( our kids are already behind in Math, Science, & History )
( parents believe they need more time in these subjects )

Lehigh Valley, can you say Goodbye Philadelphia Eagles Camp at Lehigh University

Here it is in a nutshell - the prospects of the Philadelphia Eagles cancel of the 2011 training camp at Lehigh University....

The probability of the Philadelphia Eagles returning to Lehigh University this summer is in doubt. Progress is being reported but time is running out. The lockout will not end until a new agreement is finalized, voted on and signed by the players. Time is the main problem - "Not enough time".

The trade and free agency period takes time also and that would begin after an agreement is signed. The Eagles may not have enough time to train at the Lehigh campus. The Eagles have an August 17 checkout date. This date is necessary in order to turn around the dorm, athletic and dining facilities for student use a week later.

The Eagles may have to skip Lehigh altogether and hold their entire training camp at the NovaCare Complex which is the team's regular practice facility in south Philadelphia. Some bad omens have already happened regarding training camp. The Baltimore Ravens have already cancelled the public portion of their camp at McDaniel College. The New York Jets followed suit and cancelled their off-site training camp. The dominos could start to fall as the other teams may do the same and cancel their off-site training camps.

Can you say "Goodbye Eagles for summer 2011"? There's always next year.

30 million barrels of oil from Strategic Petro. Reserves = about 2 day supply of Gasoline

U.S. gasoline demand is projected to average 9.12 million barrels per day in 2011. The 30 million barrels of oil that is being released from the Strategic Petro. Reserves equals just over a 2 day supply of Gasoline.

The markup on gasoline in 2010 was about 16.3 cents per gallon.
The federal excise tax on gasoline is 18.4 cents per gallon.

Higher gas prices hurt the economy more in the summer than they do in the spring.

It is a proven fact that open windows add drag and reduce your car's gas mileage by as much as 10% so keep your car windows closed on long stretches of the highway. Stop-and-go traffic offers a different challenge to save gas. If it's not too uncomfortable lower your car windows and save the air-conditioning. Air-conditioning will drain your gas tank and you'll be stopping a lot sooner to refill.

5 ft 125 lb. Woman jumps on car hood of 3 Men stealing beer from Walmart - Unbelievable

A very brave Texas woman shopping at Walmart saw 3 Men take a few cases beer and just walk out of the store without paying. The woman disgusted with the boldness of the act followed the men into the parking lot and jumped on their car hood as they were trying to escape.

She reportedly was yelling at the men ... "You punks, you are not going to get away with this". The men laughed at her and drove off. She fell from the car and suffered a bruised nose and 2 black eyes as she grabbed the driver's door and was dragged along the pavement. But she got the last laugh as police later found the men. They now face charges of evading arrest and aggravated robbery.

NBC omits "under God" from pledge of allegiance at US Open - these NBC activists just Never Quit

NBC led off its U.S. Open telecast with a pre-taped segment of the pledge of allegiance edited with patriotic images. There were 2 versions of the "pledge" within the NBC produced video.

The problem, controversy and outcry were that NBC left out the words "under God" and ""indivisible" in the 1st version. The 2nd version went even further and left out "one nation" as well. There was an immediate outcry on Twitter that was almost universally negative and forced NBC to make one of those ridiculous generic apologies.

NBC had host Dan Hicks read the following statement later in the telecast...

"It was our intent to begin our coverage of this U.S. Open championship with a feature that captured the patriotism of our national championship being here in our nation's capital for the third time. Regrettably, a portion of the pledge of allegiance that was in that feature was edited out. It was not done to upset anyone and we'd like to apologize to those of you who were offended by it."

Total CRAP apology from NBC - What's wrong with these people?

NBC edits programming constantly, 24 -7. It's an integral part of any programming show. Editors look at every word to determine what exactly to edit out. The pledge of allegiance is not that long .... and you choose to edit out "under God" and "indivisible" and "one nation" - ALL 3 references. And then NBC refers to "under God" as just "a portion" of the pledge.

Did Steven Spielberg have Actress Megan Fox fired from Transformers movie ? ....

Hollywood Confusion:
It has been reported that Steven Spielberg demanded that actress Megan Fox be fired from the third "Transformers" movie. A representative for the actress said that it was Megan Fox's decision to leave the movie. Other rumors say that it was director Michael Bay’s decision to have Megan replaced in the movie.

Hollywood gets more like Washington DC everyday. You cannot get a straight answer from either.

Why is Texas, the Best State for New Jobs during these recession years ?

Texas economy has grown on average 3.3% a year over the last 2 decades.
Why has Texas done so well relative to other states:

(1) Texas has rejected the economic model that now prevails in Washington.

(2) Texas stands out for its free market and business-friendly climate.

(3) Texas has no state income tax.

(4) Texas right-to-work laws do not impose unions on businesses or employees.

(5) Texas is open to global trade and competition.

(6) Texas's huge competitive advantages is its ongoing reform of the tort system, which has driven litigation costs to record lows.

(7) Texas wasn't hurt as badly by the housing crash as other states - Texas limited mortgage borrowing to 80% of the appraised value of a home.

Need a Job ? - Then Texas may be the state for you ....

Texas, the Lone Star State, has experienced a job surge in the past two years. About 37% of all net new American jobs since the recovery began were created in Texas. That is a staggering statistic and makes Texas the hands-down leader in new jobs in the entire country.

Using Bureau of Labor Statistics State-by-state employment changes since June 2009, when the recession statistically ended, show that Texas added 265,300 net jobs, out of the 722,200 nationwide.

Texas is doing so well relative to other states precisely because it has rejected the economic model that now prevails in Washington.

Representative Weiner has not actually submitted a resignation letter to Speaker John Boehner which is required for a formal resignation. So it appears that his resignation is not official as of Thursday evening. When the letter is submitted it could be read on the House floor.

Weiner and his wife were reported heading to the Hamptons. It appears the couple wants to get away for the weekend.

Once the seat is officially vacant, New York Gov. Andrew Cuomo can call a special election in the district, which covers parts of Brooklyn and Queens, within 30 to 40 days.

Americans need to pay attention to Greece and I don't mean for Vacation ..

About $30 billion dollars of Greece's debt is held by U.S. banks.

The Greeks have been insolvent for years.

French and German banks hold a large portion of the Greek debt as well. If they have problems, then are banks have problems as well.

Prime Minister George Papandreou has struggled to get support for a new package of $39.5 billion in spending cuts and tax hikes demanded by the European Union and the International Monetary Fund, which last year granted his debt-ridden nation $155 billion in bailout loans.

The fiscal measures recently imposed have sparked riots on the streets of Athens and opened criticism from Papandreou's Socialist lawmakers. Papandreou's desperate efforts to form a coalition government with the opposition conservatives collapsed this week.

It's a globally intertwined World and that means our Money as well.

America’s love affair with Pickup Trucks may finally be over ....

A triple whammy has hit the pickup truck market and many people in the auto industry feel it is over for good:

      1. rising fuel costs,
      2. a terrible economy,
      3. just plane changing consumer tastes.

About ½ of the pickup market has evaporated over the past 12 years and those former truck buyers are not likely to return. The big pickup has been down-and-out many times before but has always managed to stage a comeback whenever times were good.

The volatile economy has eroded consumer confidence. Couple that erosion of confidence with the growing acceptance that gas is never going to be "cheap" again and you can see why many feel the “age of the big pickup truck is over".

Pickup trucks made up about 12% of industry sales in 2010 but more consumers are shifting away from big pickups and opting for mid-sized "crossover" vehicles like the Chevy Equinox and the Buick Enclave. These vehicles offer big cargo and passenger capacities, but are smaller and more fuel efficient. They get about 24 miles per gallon which is about 50% more than that of pickups.
