At one time, $5 per gallon gasoline seemed like a far-fetched idea, but that is not the case any longer. As of Monday, April 10 in Chicago the average price for a gallon of regular unleaded gasoline was $4.11. A month ago the price was $3.71 and $3.10 a gallon at this time a year ago.
More and more experts believe that $5 per gallon gasoline is possible by Memorial Day or sometime this summer. A few however believe that it is unlikely over the next six weeks.
Prices at some gas stations outside of Chicago were still below $4, a real bargain compared to the $4.29 to -$4.40 range at some service stations in downtown Chicago.
