Over half of all the states now provide some form of electronic toll collection. These electronic systems allow drivers to pay road tolls without having to stop and fumble for change to give to an attendant while sitting idle and wasting fuel not to mention causing the fuel-wasting backups that we see at the tollbooths.
E-Z Pass and other electronic systems will grow in use and become more prevalent as cash-strapped states look for ways to cut toll-collecting expenses. Many states are also adding electronic systems thereby saving money on salaries for toll collectors. It is a small change that can save millions of gallons of fuel each year.
