Solar Energy - Selling Your solar power back to PPL

Did you know that, if you are a homeowner or business that generates your own power with an alternate energy source like solar or even wind and you produce more power than you can use, the PUC requires that electric utilities purchase that excess power from you.

PPL connected approximately 900 solar and wind generators to its grid in 2010 but few of them generate enough power to sell electricity back to the utility company.

Afraid of Disposing of the NEW - Compact Fluorescent Light (CFL) Bulb

EPA recommends that residents follow the cleanup and disposal steps described below:

1.Before cleanup ◦Have people and pets leave the room.
◦Air out the room for 5-10 minutes by opening a window or door to the outdoor environment.
◦Shut off the central forced air heating/air-conditioning system, if you have one.
◦Collect materials needed to clean up broken bulb.

2.During cleanup ◦Be thorough in collecting broken glass and visible powder.
◦Place cleanup materials in a sealable container.

3.After cleanup ◦Promptly place all bulb debris and cleanup materials outdoors in a trash container or protected area until materials can be disposed of properly. Avoid leaving any bulb fragments or cleanup materials indoors.
◦If practical, continue to air out the room where the bulb was broken and leave the heating/air conditioning system shut off for several hours.

I think that I am now officially afraid after reading these EPA recommends. In September 2010, the last major GE manufacturing plant for incandescent light bulbs in the U.S. closed in Winchester, Virginia.

ATT $39 Billion bid for T-Mobil - What it means to us

AT&T made a surprise bid to acquire T-Mobile USA for a reported $39 Billion. Obviously that means more consolidation in this competitive industry. If this acquisition gets approved it will make AT&T and Verizon Wireless the 1-2 punch in wireless carriers.
Verizon will undoubtedly feel compelled to make some acquisition of its own. More consolidation …. yadda yadda yadda. I am afraid that such consolidation frenzy will drive up mobile service rates and probably reduce the number of phones available to all subscribers. AT&T states that this deal will increase competition and lower prices. Where have I heard that before?

Less competition = Lower prices. <=== Does this equation sound correct to you?

Some phrases come to mind that make me queasy….. Captive audience, Only show in town.

The good news is that Bank of America, Citi and Wells Fargo have not yet introduced similar changes to the ATM system. Can they be far behind ???

March 2011 - What kind of Jobs are being created ?

March 2011
What kind of jobs are being created?
Some recent studies suggest that the new jobs being created in our current economy pay less and offer fewer work hours than the ones they replaced since the current recession started.
Lower-wage industries like retail and food preparation accounted for roughly 23 % of the jobs lost during the recession, but only 49 % of the jobs gained over the last year.
Higher-wage industries accounted for 40 % of the jobs lost in the current recession, but add up to just 14 % of the new jobs gained. In other words, low paying jobs are increasing as a percentage of total jobs, while high-paying jobs are on the decline.

US Government wants your $1 Paper Bills - Now

March, 2011
The U.S. Government Accountability Office issued a formal proposal to the Treasury and Federal Reserve asserting that if it eliminated the $1 bill and replaced it with a $1 coin, the USA could save approximately $5.5 billion during the next 30 years. The reasoning for the proposed change from paper to coin for the $1 currency is that the dollar bill has a shorter lifespan than dollar coins. The paper dollar wears much faster than a coin causing the government to spend more money to print new bills.
