Why are BIG name Retailers moving "Black Friday" into Thanksgiving Day .....

2010 estimates show that the number of people who began their Black Friday shopping at midnight was 3 times the amount of people in 2009. This year, 2011 marks Target's earliest opening ever. Target, Best Buy, Macy's and Kohl's are all opening at midnight on Thanksgiving eve. Wal-Mart recently announced plans to open its doors to the public at 10 pm. Toys R Us followed suit and announced that it would open most stores as early as 9 pm. on the day before Black Friday.

Thanksgiving Day openings have been a big boon to retailers during this current economic downturn that the country is experiencing. The number of people, who shop on Thanksgiving, both online and in stores, reportedly rose to 22.3 million in 2010. According to the National Retail Federation that was about double the amount just 5 years earlier.

Will handful of “Occupy Bethlehem” squatters be the Grinch that Stole Christmas 2011 in Bethlehem?

If you hadn’t noticed there are a handful of squatters and a little tent shantytown located on the Payrow Plaza area between the Bethlehem Public Library and City Hall. Bethlehem's kind Mayor, John Callahan, even gave the group pizza on Wednesday but there might be a awkward problem for the Mayor and the city in the coming weeks, mainly – the traditional Christmas tree in the plaza.

Tomorrow is the 1st of November and within a few weeks the long running tradition of erecting the city of Bethlehem’s large Christmas tree will be here. If you have never seen the tree arrive it is quit a sight. The tree comes in on a long truck trailer and a huge crane and skillful workers maneuver the large tree into place and anchor the tree with strong cables. The city then beautifully decorates the tree and erects the Christmas scene in front of the tree.

Some questionable problems remain. It appears the squatters are in the way of erecting the tree. Will the tree be able to be erected safety with the squatters present? Will the squatters and tent shantytown become part of the Bethlehem’s beautiful Christmas tree and Christmas scene?

How long would you sit in a plane on the airport tarmac ? - How about 7 Hours

Passengers on several JetBlue airplanes and one American Airline airplane said that they were stranded on the airport tarmac for 7 hours or more this past weekend after being diverted from New York area airports on Saturday to Bradley International Airport near Hartford, Conn.

It was just last year that the Department of Transportation implemented a regulation that fines airlines for holding domestic flights on the tarmac for more than 3 hours. This year, the rule was extended to apply to international flights that are held on the tarmac for more than 4 hours. There is only one problem with this regulation - The Department of Transportation often does not enforce the fines to their full extent unless delays are extreme. I don't know about you but 7 hours sounds extreme to me.

Lehigh Valley was one of the hardest-hit spots in PPL's 29-county coverage area

Approximately 300 crews from as far away as Kentucky and Michigan are working around-the-clock to fix roughly 2,800 instances of snowstorm damage to transformers, service lines and other electrical equipment failures. PPL has had to work on as many as 10 major lines that supply power to over 80,000 customers. Saturday's storm brought the biggest October snowfall ever to our region. Let's hope that that record will never be broken again.

The Nasty Halloween Trick for 2011 was a BIG snowstorm .....

Some traffic signals are still out in the Lehigh Valley and many downed trees continue to block roads. PPL crews are still working around the clock but many residents are still without power in Lehigh County. The bulk of the outages occurred in Allentown and South Whitehall. PPL customers are still without power this Sunday in Allentown, Bethlehem, Emmaus, Salisbury, South Whitehall, Lower Macungie, and Upper Saucon. The mantra is "Melt snow Melt"

Will "Black Friday" be a Boom or Bust ???

Will this holiday season be a “Boom” or “Bust” for shoppers and retailers alike? Let's face it we all need clothing and this Christmas season may be a BIG year for clothing sales. This year shoppers are showing a preference for inexpensive and accessible fashion and it’s not even Christmas yet. Department stores are competing with other big stores as well as with discount retailers. I think we all can expect significant markdowns across the board in the apparel category.

This year retailers have especially been limiting their inventory and may sell out of some items well before the holiday arrives. You will need nerves of steel to wait out some better prices as the holiday season progresses.

The tablet may be the hottest item this year so far. It may well be a hot item for Christmas as well. Discounted HDTVs have usually been one of the hottest items on Black Friday but you have got to believe that the demand for these big ticket items will be down this year. Who really knows, only time will tell ….. and the consumer of course.

Rain & outdoor festivals just don't mix - Rain hits Allentown Fair & ArtsQuest both ...

The Allentown Fair had a nice start but a soggy finish in 2011. The fair ended early because of the rainstorms. The overall week for the fair was a winner for fair goers and fair organizers both. The fair was forced to close 2 1/2 hours early Monday night. The estimates had the fair's overall attendance down about 50 to 60 thousand this year compared to 2010.

Approximately 200 people or so were hardy enough to watch the final day’s concerts of ArtsQuest SteelJam festival on a very rainy Monday Labor Day. It was a wet close out to a 4-day festival in Bethlehem.

Lehigh Valley is starting to feel like Mt. Waialeale in Hawaii with ALL this rain ...

I know the wettest place in the USA is Mount Waialeale on the island of Kauai in Hawaii but it sure is feeling like it here in the valley with all this rain lately.

Sure, Mount Waialeale has averaged more than 460 inches of rain over the last 32 years and it had a record 683 inches back in 1982 but does anybody live on that mountain. Yes, the Mount Waialeale summit is considered one of the rainiest spots on earth but I am beginning to think that the Lehigh Valley is moving up to number two.

State workers 4-day work week experiment is over for this western state ..

In 2008 former Utah Governor Jon Huntsman launched the "4 day / 10 hour workweek″ Monday through Thursday for thousands of state employees. The goal was to improve efficiency, reduce overhead costs and conserve energy. This was the first-in-the-nation four-day workweek for state workers. Well, its now over - history.

Lawmakers in Utah have now scratched the experiment. They say that it has not saved as much money as hoped and residents were complaining about not having access to services on Fridays.

How many Hosts does it take to replace Jerry Lewis on Muscular Dystrophy Telethon? ..

The answer is 4.

Yes, MDA has assembled a group of 4 lightweights to work the grueling 6 hours. You have got to be kidding? Replacing Jerry Lewis are Nigel Lythgoe, Nancy O'Dell, Alison Sweeney, and Jann Carl. Hey MDA, I thought the idea was to raise money to fight the disease - like the Billions of Dollars that Jerry raised over 45 years.

The 46th Annual MDA Labor Day Telethon will be on the air just 6 hours. It will be on the air Sunday from 6 p.m. to midnight. YES, it will not be the grueling 21 1/2-hour endurance contest that Jerry Lewis did for 45 years. That is just one reason why Jerry Lewis the comedian, actor, movie star, singer, writer, producer, and director is a true Hollywood Legend.

Irene shutdown Atlantic City but NOT Sands Casino in Bethlehem ....

Hurricane Irene forced the closing of ALL of the casinos in Atlantic City. Many gamblers came to the Sands in Bethlehem instead of Atlantic City. So many people responded to their gambling urge that the Sands Casino Resort 300-room hotel in Bethlehem was nearly sold out. The hotel was more than 90 % full on Friday and Saturday as the hurricane approached the Lehigh Valley and still at 80 % occupancy on Sunday. Well, I guess it’s true …. “behind every (hurricane) cloud there is a silver lining”.

Bowling BIG in '60s has collapsed as pastime sending jobs overseas except at ....

By the mid-60s the estimated number of bowling alleys across the United States were about 12,000. That was the industry's peak period. Current estimates put the number of bowling centers at less than half the peak number of 12,000.

With the slowdown in popularity big manufacturers like Brunswick Corp. moved most of their bowling equipment manufacturing overseas costing America jobs. One American company however, Ebonite International is keeping manufacturing stateside in Hopkinsville, Kentucky. You can do your part and save some American jobs by purchasing the Ebonite brand of balls and equipment and go bowling. You’ll have some good quality family-recreation and fun in the process.

The projected path has gradually shifted to the east and Irene could make landfall anywhere from South Carolina to Massachusetts over the weekend.

The Ramapo is a system of faults between the northern Appalachian Mountains and Piedmont areas to the east. This fault is probably the best known fault zone in the Mid-Atlantic due to it's proximity to the Indian Point nuclear plant in New York.

The Ramapo Fault has been blamed for several past earthquakes, but the specific association of any significant earthquake with this fault has yet to be demonstrated.
