The U.S. Geological Survey said that the earthquake was half a mile deep and centered near Louisa Virginia, which is about 40 miles northwest of Richmond. Shaking from the quake was felt at the White House and all over the East Coast. There were evacuations as far south as Charleston, South Carolina and as far north as New York.
