Gas Guzzlers are Out
Automakers always response to the demands of consumers. And what exactly do consumers want? They want engines that keep horsepower up while cutting fuel consumption, of course.
Automakers are responding to consumer demands by using turbochargers, direct fuel injection and advanced transmissions with more gears. This attention to consumer demands resulted in Ford, Honda, Chevrolet and Hyundai, all introducing conventional gas-powered cars that also achieve at least 40 mpg on EPA’s highway testing. Ford’s Fiesta and Focus, Honda’s Civic, Chevrolet’s Cruze, and Hyundai's Elantra are car models that are a direct response to these demands.
It was just one year ago that the only gas-powered, non-hybrid car in the United States that could address consumer demands was Daimler’s smart fortwo. Daimler's smart fortwo is a tiny two-seater.
