Probably the most famous highway in the USA is Route 66. It was one of the original federal routes and was established on Nov. 11, 1926. It originally ran from Chicago, Illinois through St. Louis, Missouri, then on to Kansas, Oklahoma, Texas, New Mexico, Arizona and ending in Los Angeles, California some 2,448 miles later.

Famous Route 66 marked the birth of the fast-food industry. The 1st.drive-thru restaurant appeared on Route 66. By 1970 nearly all of the original route was replaced by a more efficient 4-lane highway. Route 66 was official decommissioned but fans of the original Route 66 love to travel and enjoy one of America's true treasures.
